Auntie Belle's family scrapbook

These two photographs were given to my father by my great-aunt, Miss Isobel Hannah Leuty ("Auntie Belle"). They were originally printed on glass.

Henry "Harry" Leuty

Henry "Harry" Leuty Henry "Harry" Leuty was my great-great-great-grandfather, and was probably born in the 1820s. He was a cap-maker and pedlar who, as a young man, moved to the flourishing town of Brighton, possibly from Windsor. He married Eliza Bussing and they had four children: William Leuty, Polly Leuty, Fanny Leuty and George Edwin Leuty (exact order of birth not known).

William Leuty was born on 28th December 1850 at 25 King Street, Brighton, and is said to have been a chemist. He died before 1894. He had a son Douglas Leuty who was born about 1873 and married Annie Cann on 10th February 1894 in St. Paul's Church, St. Mary Newington, London. Douglas had a son, Wilfred Ronald Leuty.

Fanny Leuty married a Mr Oldstock, and is thought to have become Matron of Guy's Hospital, London.

The photograph shows Harry Leuty aged about 50. The photograph was probably taken around 1875.

George Edwin Leuty

George Edwin LeutyEdwin was my great-great-grandfather. He married Isabel Matilda and they had four children: George Leuty (known as "Harry"), Harry Leuty, Frank Leuty and Arthur Leuty.

He was a wood turner, whose premises were situated in Unicorn Yard, Brighton. After his death in 1918 (aged about sixty), the business passed to his son Arthur who transferred it to Castle Street about 1930 when the original premises were pulled down to make way for the Regent Cinema.

The photograph was taken at the same time as that of his father Henry, probably around 1875, when he would have been about seventeen years old.

To see a later photograph, and for details of his first son George (known as "Harry"), see Auntie Allie's scrapbook.

His second son Harry was born in March 1883 in Brighton. He married Ada and they had two children: Harry Leuty and Ted Leuty.

His third son Frank was born in June 1884 in Brighton. He had six children but they all pre-deceased him.

His fourth son Arthur married Alice and had a son Reg Leuty, who died in Plymouth in 1970. Reg married Melda and they had a son Trevor Leuty.

The story continues in Auntie Allie's scrapbook.
